Retherford Wins Dave Schultz Wrestling Excellence Award

Benton senior wrestler Zain Retherford earns another national honor. This time winning the Dave Schultz National Excellence Award in Wrestling. This award created in 1996 to honor former Olympic and World Champion wrestler Dave Schultz. The award is based on excellence in wrestling, scholastic achievement, citizenship and community service.

Zain Retherford is coming off a senior season where he went (47-0) capturing the PIAA state title at 138lbs. Retherford will continue his wrestling career at Penn State University where the Nittany Lions are coming off their 3rd National title in a row.

Zain won a state title for Line Mountain high-school in 2010 then finished third in the state in 2011. He did not compete at the high-school level in 2012 after transferring to Benton.

And just last summer Zain earned a spot on the FILA World Field Cadet National Team.

Zain Retherford from Benton Area high school won a gold medal at 63kg/138.75lbs in men’s freestyle action at the FILA Cadet World Championships last summer.

Zain took part on the USA Wrestling Junior World Championships team in Azerbaijan  twinning all four of his matches.

He beat Russian wrestler Supian Burmagomedov in the second and third periods for the gold medal. “This means a lot. It is a stepping stone for international events in the future,” Retherford said.

Retherford won titles at the FILA Cadet Nationals in Akron and the Junior Nationals in Fargo last summer.
